A Homemade Life

A Homemade Life, by  Molly Wizenberg

As much as I loved The Nasty Bits, I really didn't love this book.  I thought I would.  I really wanted to, but, I kind of hated it.

There.  I said it.  I hated this book.

I've read reviews of people devouring it in two days- which is great- that's what I wanted to do.  That's what I thought I would do.  In the end I couldn't get past the nagging voice in the back of my head saying "sounds like a spoiled rich girl" long enough to get through the first half, let alone the entire book.

I did make one recipe out of it on a rainy afternoon when I was feeling particularly good and thought it might be a nice idea to actually cook something for the boys lunch for a change.  I had just finished the chapter ending with the recipe for Dutch Baby and it seemed easy and I had all the ingredients on hand.  It was easy, the boys loved it, I'll probably make it again.  That was the last chapter I read though...maybe I'll try again this summer.  Maybe not.

Maybe I'll have to dive into the stack of Bourdain books my husband just received from Amazon to get myself back in the mood for food.  Either way, I'm moving on.

  1. Sorry to hear you weren't a fan. I was the opposite, didn't really like Nasty Bits but loved this one. At least you got a Dutch Baby out of it! I still haven't tried that recipe but it sounds great.

  2. Your background seriously messed with my eyes for a minute, I felt all caddywompus. I didn't hate the book. Her writing style made it pretty easy not to grind my teeth at the fact that there were no pictures of her food or experiences, however as you said, it kept biting at me that she came across as someone who was very privileged, who as we both know from our years at Target is not me. I could have years of dreamy memories and a well-marked passport had I not been slaving away and going to college on whatever pennies I could manage to rub together each semester. I think that's why I found Bourdain more "me" -- even though I've never been addicted to cocaine, barb's or alcohol.

  3. I am more of a Bourdain person myself too...but honestly I have to say I watch his show and I think he is just a true and honest bad-ass. :) I love No Reservations, I think Bourdain has a true respect for all cultures and it's fun to watch his travels around the world.

I did like this book too though (but of course it is much different); after reading some of the book reviews where they have made some of the recipes I'm thinking this book may have been worth the $15 for the recipes alone. I'm anxious to try out those prunes (however weird that sounds, lol) and the macaroons. :D
